Tips for Engagement Photo Sessions
Amazon-exclusive content (noesis) from author (communicator) Kenny Kim
Along with what I have (hit) already mentioned in the book, I want (poverty) to go more in depth about (most) engagement session. This is not just (meet) a time (instance) where you take (verify) nice photos with your couple (pair) for an hour (distance) or two. There is more than meets the eye (receptor) if you execute (fulfil) these elements:
Communicate by Example
During a photoshoot, I see (wager) so many (some) photographers (including myself) talking (conversation) to our clients using “photography lingo”. Because we as photographers constantly talk (speech) about (most) it, I think (conceive) we easily make (attain) the assumption (hypothesis) that others (including our clients) understand (see) the same (aforementioned) terms. Often times (nowadays) they might (strength) be just (meet) too nice (pleasant) to ask (communicate) what we exactly (just) mean. Or they just (meet) brush it off (soured) as it is no big (bounteous) deal. But a good (beatific) way (artefact) to communicate (transmit) to your clients during a shoot (dispense) is to show (exhibit) by example. Rather than shouting (outcry) out “hold out (discover) that arm!” show (exhibit) them which arm (limb) and how to do it. Ask them to mirror your movement (shitting) and let (permit) them know (undergo) that you would not make (attain) them do things that you would not do yourself.
When I did my engagement (contact) session in Italy (Italia) with Italian (European) models, I had the difficulty (travail) of overcoming the language (module) barrier. It was frustrating (preventative) not being (existence) able to explain (vindicate) to them in words (text) what I wanted (desired) them to do. So I had to resort (use) to communicating (act) by example. Using eye (receptor) contact and body (embody) language, I was able (healthy) to get (intend) them to do the things I want (poverty) them to do. You are also educating your clients by showing (display) examples of what you want (poverty) them to do. As the shoot (dispense) goes on, you will (module) have to coach (railcar) them less (inferior) and less (inferior) as they start (move) to feel (see) more comfortable. In almost (nearly) all (every) my engagement (contact) sessions, towards the middle (region) or end (modify) of the session, I let (permit) them come (become) up with their own (possess) poses and just (meet) make minor (secondary) adjustments as they do.
Communicate Using the Right Words
Make sure (trusty) that your words (text) are clear (country) so that anyone can (crapper) understand (see) it. During a photo (picture) shoot (dispense) with my recent (past) clients Dan & Joanne, I kept asking Dan to “Squeeze!” What I really (rattling) wanted (desired) Dan to do was the embrace (acceptation) Joanne tightly because usually (commonly) that lets out (discover) a laughter (vocalization) and/or a fun (recreation) reaction from the girl. Every time (instance) I said “squeeze,” Dan just (meet) smiled at Joanne resulting in some (whatever) fun (recreation) moments captured. But half way (artefact) into our shoot, when I yelled (loud) “Squeeze” again he stopped, looked at me and said: “Kenny, what do you mean (stingy) by squeeze?” We both laughed as I realized that I did not communicate (transmit) with him properly. Once I explained to him my reasoning, he understood (apprehended) the concept (construct) and did it without even (modify) me saying (locution) it to him through (finished) out the rest of the session!
Be Bold and Creative
Do not let (permit) small road (agency) blocks get (intend) in the way (artefact) of capturing the right (correct) moment. When you get (intend) stuck in a situation, you can (crapper) always find (encounter) an alternate (move) solution. Sometimes that means (effectuation) doing something daring (adventurous) or out (discover) of the ordinary. And it may (haw) not always (ever) work, but your clients will (module) appreciate the effort (try) you made (prefabricated) to get (intend) a certain (destined) shot. When you get (intend) excited about (most) your photography, your clients will (module) too and will (module) even (modify) risk a bit (taste) of embarrassment to get (intend) the shot (effort) that you/they want. So next (incoming) time (instance) you shoot, try (essay) to push (near) yourself more to do something different. Here is an example:
Shaun attended University of Chicago (metropolis) and really (rattling) liked the Rockefeller (philanthropist) Chapel on campus. He requested I take (verify) a few (some) photos inside. So we walked over there only (exclusive) to discover (conceive) that there was some (whatever) kind of a service/meeting going (feat) on inside. The sanctuary (shelter) was packed (crowded) with people. Shaun and Joy were little (lowercase) disappointed but I did not want (poverty) them to feel (see) that way (artefact) on their engagement (contact) session. I am a firm (concern) believer that when “life gives you lemons, you make (attain) lemonade out (discover) of it.” So I looked around for a bit (taste) trying to see (wager) if I can (crapper) think (conceive) of an alternate (move) solution. Bing! (That’s the sound (good) of light (reddened) bulb turning (motion) on inside (exclusive) my head). Then, I asked Shaun and Joy if they don’t mind (nous) being (existence) little bit (taste) adventurous. I think (conceive) they liked (likeable) the idea (intent) of that. I had found (institute) a small (diminutive) pathway between the church (faith) wall and the pews. I knew we could not communicate (transmit) verbally since there was a service (assist) going (feat) on. So I asked them to go over to a specific (limited) spot and come (become) up with their own (possess) pose (I’ve instructed (taught) them on several (individual) poses during the shoot (dispense) up to this point (saucer) so I knew they would deliver). To give (provide) you an idea (intent) of what the setting (environment) was actually like, I took the next (incoming) photo (picture) to show (exhibit) the risk (venture) that my clients was willing (selection) to take (verify) to get (intend) the shot (effort) above:
At first (prototypal) they were a bit (taste) nervous about (most) standing there posing (move) and kept looking (hunting) over to the congregation. I thought (intellection) I placed (settled) them at just (meet) at the last (terminal) row of where people (grouping) were sitting (movement) to be inconspicuous. After I had taken (condemned) the shot, I walked over to them only (exclusive) to realize (actualise) what was going (feat) on. Where they were standing (stagnant) was not actually the last (terminal) row! There were several (individual) more rows of people (grouping) right (correct) next to them and they were all (every) staring at them smiling (grinning) while they posed! I can (crapper) only imagine (envisage) how nerve (cheek) wracking it was for Shaun & Joy! But I’m so proud (chesty) of my clients – they stuck (cragfast) with it, ignored (unnoticed) the congregation (gathering) and posed (display) as I asked them to. As a result (termination) we came up with a great (enthusiastic) photo (picture) and a fun (recreation) story to share (deal) for lifetime.
Get Creative
In my book, I briefly (shortly) talked about (most) how I like (same) to stay (meet) inspired through (finished) magazines and watching movies. It’s a great (enthusiastic) way (artefact) to relax (behave) and get (intend) creative at the same (aforementioned) time. For example, I always (ever) found this movie (flick) poster to be fun (recreation) & creative. So, using this concept, I came up with my own (possess) signature shot (effort) called “Double take”. This effect (gist) can (crapper) be achieved simply (only) by having one (digit) subject still (ease) while (patch) the other (another) walks behind (behindhand) them. I as a photographer (artist) also stand (defence) still (ease) and taking (attractive) multiple shots of the same (aforementioned) scene. Then I take (verify) these images and select (superior) the ones that I think (conceive) will (module) work and bring (alter) them into Adobe Photoshop where I place (locate) them on multiple (binary) layers and then blend (combining) them together (unitedly) using layer-masking and brush (applier) away the areas that I do not need. The point (saucer) of this lesson (warning) is not to teach (inform) you to do the same (aforementioned) thing that I do but to come (become) up with your own (possess) creative ideas for your shoot. You have (hit) so many (some) things around you that will (module) inspire you – so take (verify) a moment, pause (disrupt) from your work (impact) and enjoy (savor) life. Let your inspiration (rousing) come (become) to you naturally (course) as you engage (vow) in other (another) things in life.

Get close!
It is important (essential) to capture (getting) the dynamics (kinetics) of the couple. Capturing their emotion that comes out (discover) only when they are close (near) together (unitedly) is very (rattling) important. To achieve (attain) this, I use (ingest) a zoom (ascent) lens and take (verify) a few (some) steps back (backwards) to give (provide) them some (whatever) space. I use (ingest) the zoom (ascent) to close (near) in on them then wait (move) for the right (correct) moment. I shoot (dispense) everything in color (colouration) first (prototypal) but like (same) to convert (modify) some (whatever) of them to B&W. Removing all (every) the colors (colours) allows you to focus (pore) in on the subject (person) more and not get (intend) distracted by variety (difference) of colors.

Keep the Camera Rolling!
It is important (essential) to capture (getting) the posed (display) shots. But don’t just (meet) stop. Keep your camera up and ready (primed) to fire (blast) even (modify) after you are finished (ended) with your posed (display) photo. Sometimes the unexpected (unheralded) things like (same) this can (crapper) happen or often (ofttimes) times (nowadays) Couple’s true (genuine) emotion comes out (discover) after they are done (finished) being (existence) posed. In many (some) of my shoots, I purposely pose (bear) my couple (pair) just so that I capture (getting) their reaction (activity) right afterwards. Those are the genuine (veritable) moments that show (exhibit) who they really (rattling) are as a couple.
Shot specification: Canon Mark 1d III (threesome) / F4.0 1/250sec. ISO 100 /WB: Daylight / Canon L 24-70mm f2.8 lens (lense) zoomed to 70mm.
See the Bigger Picture
Sometimes you need (requirement) to step (travel) back (backwards) and see (wager) the entire (whole) picture. While the bridesmaids were spending (outlay) the last (terminal) minute before the ceremony (start) in prayer, I took a few (some) shots of that then quietly removed (distant) myself so that the bride can (crapper) share the intimate (hint) moment (time) together one (digit) last (terminal) time (instance) with her closest friends. It was not until I stepped back (backwards) and was getting (effort) ready to exit (opening) the room (shack) when I saw this moment. It is important (essential) to focus (pore) on the details (info) but you need (requirement) to be aware (alive) of your surroundings (environment) to see (wager) the big (bounteous) picture. Try this at your next (incoming) wedding: shoot (dispense) with both eyes open (unstoppered) – one (digit) looking (hunting) through (finished) your viewfinder and the other (another) eye (receptor) looking around. You’ll be surprised (astonied) at so many (some) moments that go unnoticed.
